Health Tips – We know that you are covered with your recent purchase of health insurance during open enrollment. Having the ability to go to the Doctors is a relief if you get sick, but you still want to try and keep yourself healthy. The winter cold and flu season is upon us. Here are 5 tips to help keep healthy this winter.
Wash your Hands
Get into the habit of washing your hands. Wash them before you eat, after you come home from work or school, and before bed. We lose track of where we have been and what we have touched, especially kids. It’s common practice to wash after using the restroom but also make it part of your routine to wash before you eat. This will help reduce the number of germs you are exposed to and make you feel better about eating with your fingers.
Drink Plenty of Water
This is sometimes hard in winter when we are cold. All we want is warm liquids like coffee and tea, not plain water. You will notice small signs that you are getting dehydrated like chapped lips, darker color urine, and actually using the bathroom less frequently. One way to guarantee good hydration is to have a glass of water as soon as you wake up in the morning or try filling a water bottle and finishing it before the end of the day. Cold weather means dryer air and less sweet, but you still need water.
Stay Active
It is very easy with the days getting darker earlier to avoid exercise. It seems like a much better idea when getting home to just crawl into pj’s and get comfy on the couch in front of the tv. We do slow down in winter but that doesn’t mean you have to stop moving. If you work in an office building, take the stairs for added exercise. Hop on a stationary bike, do a yoga or workout routine off of youtube. This is fun with kids because they will want to join. Fight the urge to constantly sleep and know that staying active will help your overall health.
Manage Stress
The holidays are upon us. This is sometimes the most stressful time of the year. Try and take stock of what you need and be conscious of your stress level. Ask yourself what you need and let yourself have it. Treat yourself to whatever helps you manage stress. Need new ideas? There are plenty of stress apps, Pinterest ideas, and other various outlets for stress reducers.
Take advantage of your health insurance plan. Doctors aren’t just for when you are sick but also to help keep you in good health. Have an active roll in your healthcare and have routine conversations with your professionals. Schedule that yearly check-up soon and stay ahead of the game.
